‘Because of Winn-dixie’ novel was written by Kate DiCamillo published by Candlewick Books. Kate DiCamillo won the 2001 Newbery Medal Honor Books award and Parents’ Choice® Gold Award for this book.

‘Because of Winn-dixie’ plot is about a girl who learns to make new friends and loves her new home in Naomi, Florida. Winn dixie story starts as Opal adopts winn dixie, a rambunctious little dog.

Opal visits the Winn-Dixie grocery store to buy some glossary. There she sees the store manager chasing a puppy through Ashley’s. When Opal notices the manager call the pound, she feels sad for the puppy.

She pretends as if the dog is her. Later she named the dog after the glossary store’ winn-dixie.’ She takes him home to her father, named ‘Preacher’. Opal asks her father if she can keep the puppy. As ‘Winn-dixie’ makes a good impression, the preacher allows the dog to stay with them.

Opal is tormenting her life in the new place. Her mother left her alone when she was a baby, and her father rarely talked with her. Beginning of the novel, the preacher tells Opal ten things about her mother. She used to figure out her mother by clinging to these memories. The preacher also tells Opal that her mother left her because she was an alcoholic and could not stop drinking. 

For the love of winn dixie, Opal visits new places and begins to make some friends. She befriends ‘Franny Block’, a librarian who mistakes Winn Dixie for a bear. Later she befriends ‘Gloria Dump’, a blind who feeds ‘Winn-dixie’ peanut butter. And befriends Otis, a musician who works at Gertrude’s Pets. Later Opal gets a job mopping the floor at a pet store to spend for a collar and leash for winn-dixie.

As the story progresses, Opal learns a lot about her pain and knows the people who live beside her. She forgives her mother when she sees ‘Gloria Dump’ drunk, empty a full bottle of whisky.

At the end of the novel, Opal arranges a party to celebrate with her new friend. She visits her mother and tells her she is happy with her father and will not miss her anymore. Written for a young audience, Kate DiCamillo describes the feeling of loneliness that the kids can easily illuminate.

‘Moon over Manifest’ book tells the story of ‘Abilene‘, a 12 year old girl who used to living down and out with her father during the Great Depression. He sends her to his old friend, named ‘Shady’, for the summer as he works for a railroad job. 

Abilene spends quite a bit of time with her new friends, ‘Ruthanne‘ and ‘Lettie‘, by solving an old town mystery. While in the house, she finds a hidden box of documents that brings her out the mystery of Manifest. She determines the role, her father played in history.

However, during the chase, one of the two brothers trips and is killed by an axe. Later a bobcat badly injured the two dogs. They died.
